|Alf White Non Professional Award|
The opal industry has been most fortunate to have members its midst whose vision and passion has ignited exciting chapters in the direction that our National Gemstone has taken throughout the past century.
One such forefather was Alf White who was well known and respected on the Australian Opal Fields.
Alf’s vision was to create a higher demand for Black Opal by in traducing a technique which minimized waste.
As one of the founders of the Opal Jewellery Design Awards Association, it was this freeform and/or undulating opal concept on which today’s International Opal Jewellery Design Awards Association was born.
‘Each opal is too rare, beautiful and valuable to be grinding it away into conventional shapes when it deserves to be presented in its natural shape, as Mother Nature intended it’, he said.
Alf was adamant that ‘we needed more jewellery designers to design unique, one of a kind settings to suit the opal, not cut these precious gems to suit the setting’.
In the infancy of this concept Alf was in awe of the creativity produced by Christine Roussel.
‘This lady has a natural artistic talent’, he said ‘and she could uncover the very best in each and every opal that she worked on’.
To perpetuate the memory of Alf White, the Alf White Non Professional Award was created.
The Non Professional, ‘Hobby Jewellers’, were very close to Alf’s heart as he saw them as a huge source of untapped talent who were integral to the progression of the opal industry.
At each International Opal Jewellery Design Awards event , Marguritte White and family provide valuable opal sponsorship in this category for which we are deeply indebted.
